The location of Michael Jackson’s final resting place remains a mystery, hours after the glittering public memorial to the King of Pop in downtown LA.

Jackson’s family earlier surprised mourners after deciding to put the singer’s gold-plated coffin on view at the Staples Centre after a private ceremony at the Forest Lawn mortuary.

The Jacksons have now gathered at a five-star Beverly Hills hotel for a post-memorial lunch, but the destination of the singer’s casket and when, or if, it will be interred is unclear.

A spokeswoman for the family declined to comment.

Local media reports the coffin is being taken to an unknown location and will not return to the cemetery in the Hollywood Hills where it started the day.

The uncertainty is likely to fuel speculation that the singer may yet be laid to rest at his beloved Neverland Ranch in the secluded California wine country north-west of Los Angeles.

Although the Jackson family last week quashed plans to hold a public viewing of Jackson’s body at the estate, family members remain keen on the idea of Neverland becoming the star’s permanent resting place.

In an interview with NBC, Jermaine Jackson said it would be a fitting.

“This is his home, he created this. Why wouldn’t he be here?” he said.

“I feel his presence. And I love that, and I want my mother to come back here and feel what I feel. He built this place with love and you can see it and feel it.”

In other developments, public health officials have released Jackson’s death certificate.

The cause of death is listed as “deferred” and does not state where Jackson will be buried.

Police and coroner’s officials continue to probe the cause of death for the 50-year-old singer.
