Obama The American President with a ‘difference’ celebrates diwali. He lit a ceremonial Diwali lamp at the White House and wished everyone a “Happy Diwali and Saal Mubarak” He is the first US president celebrating Indian festival of lights.

He is really different from other US presidents. He got Nobel peace prize recently. He is first in many things :-first African American to hold the office, as well as the first president born in Hawaii,first to nobel peace prize, first to celebrate diwali.

“This coming Saturday, Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists, in America and around the world, will celebrate this holiday by lighting diyas, or lamps, which symbolise the victory of light over darkness, and knowledge over ignorance,” said Obama at a ceremony in the East Room.

The half-hour East Room celebration was attended by a crowd of Indians and other Asians.

In the history of the Nobel Peace Prize, only 4 US presidents have been awarded so far, including the recent award for Pres. Barack Obama.

So who are the other three US Presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize?

1. Theodore Roosevelt (1906) – He negotiated an end to the Russo-Japanese War, for which he won the Nobel Peace Prize.

2. Woodrow Wilson (1919) – He went to Paris in 1919 to create the League of Nations and shape the Treaty of Versailles. For his efforts to form the League, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

3. Jimmy Carter Jr (2002) – In 2002, President Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work “to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development” through The Carter Center. Unlike presidents Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson that were sitting presidents at the time, Carter is the only ex-president to have been awarded the Prize.
